The Economic, Social & Labor Council Held All Ears' Concert for Delivery Riders

The Economic, Social & Labor Council (hereinafter referred to as ESLC) held ‘All Ears’ Concert for delivery riders' and discussed hardships that they suffer in the field, and solutions to them, in the conference room of Seoul Dongbu District Public Prosecutor's Office, in last January 23. Delivery riders began to complain of unfair trade between the platform company and riders.


A delivery rider called A said, “Delivery riders often have to follow blindly to the decisions that the company makes, in the contract relations with the company”, with a remark that as far as the earmark of fee for delivery is concerned, the company needs to disclose transparent information, by all means.” An issue about the substantiality of safety education was posted.


A delivery rider called B pointed out, “The company and local government provide safety education, separately and there is no substantive content”, emphasizing that safety education should be substantially improved in by developing the standardized teaching materials with professional instructors. The necessity for government’s support about delivery riders was raised.


A delivery rider called C said, “Delivery riders have been rarely supported, while freight drivers are given the benefit from a cut of paid shipping insurance premium and freight car fuel cost”, mentioning that delivery has become the national industry in the digital era.


Chairman Kim Moon-soo stated, “Listening to the voices of vulnerable groups that work in poor work place, is important, above all, in order to resolve problems in labor markets.” He added that he would bend over backward to provide the environment for delivery riders to work fairly and safely.


Meanwhile, the All Ears’ Concert was held with the participation of delivery platform riders, Song Myeong-jin, the Director of Korea Platform Freelancer Labor Mutual Aid Association, and Park Hyeon-ho, the Policy Specialist of the association, and others including Chairman Kim Moonsoo. All Ears’ Concert which was planned under the cause of meeting vulnerable groups suffering hardships in labor markets and listening to their voices, more carefully, has been held over 12 times, up to now.
