Meeting between ESLC Chairperson Kwon Gi-seob and Uzbek Ambassador Alisher Abdusalomov
On August 11, Economic, Social and Labor Council (ESLC) Chairperson Kwon Gi-seob met with Ambassador Alisher Abdusalomov of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Korea to discuss avenues for cooperation in social dialogue and sustainable economic and social development in both countries.
This meeting was a follow-up to the “Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Social Dialogue,” concluded in June in Tashkent between the ESLC and Uzbekistan’s Tripartite Committee, and it was held at the request of the Ambassador.
Ambassador Abdusalomov said during the meeting, “With the launch of the new government, cooperation between the two countries has been strengthened across various fields, moving toward a special strategic partnership. Uzbekistan has designated this year as the ‘Year of Mutual Exchange,’ and we hope to expand cooperation not only in gas and electricity but also in the fields of ICT, 5G, healthcare, and biotechnology.”
He emphasized, “In particular, given the high level of governmental interest and expectations regarding social dialogue, cooperation with Korea is even more important.”
In response, Chairperson Kwon Gi-seob stated, “Amid complex crises and rapid changes in the economic and social environment, social dialogue — in which labor, management, and government jointly discuss solutions to diverse issues — is an essential and indispensable process for a nation’s sustainable growth and development.”
He added, “Going forward, we hope the two countries will continue to share experiences and successful know-how in social dialogue on the basis of an equal partnership, and move forward together on a path of mutual advancement.”
At the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on concrete cooperation measures and proposals for advancing social dialogue; on current employment and labor issues in both countries; and on ways to protect the rights of migrant workers from Uzbekistan in Korea and to prevent irregular stays.
